A Brief History of Hacks: The Evolution of Cheating in Video Games
Just like Stephen Hawking in his iconic book A Brief History of Time, we’ll dive into the world of cheats and trace the evolution of cheating methods in video games - from simple memory modifications in single-player games to tampering with network packets in online multiplayer matches. We’ll see how what began as relatively harmless practices quickly evolved into sophisticated methods of gaining an unfair advantage.
We’ll discuss how the endless arms race between cheat developers and game studios impacts the gaming industry - and, as a result, the players themselves, who increasingly become victims of deeper surveillance in the ongoing effort to ensure fair gameplay.
In his presentation, Piotr will include case studies of popular games where cheating had a significant impact on players, and will discuss the strategies and tools developed in response to unfair assistance methods, such as VAC, Denuvo, and the controversial Vanguard.
